Biography

Ernest George JEFFREYS, b. 1898, Casterton, Victoria, son of John JEFFREYS and Elizabeth Jane FOSTER. Pte 6134, 8th & 37th Battalion, AIF, enlisted 1-05-1916, KIA Villers-Bretonneux, France, 20-07-1918. Casterton Town Hall Honour Roll Casterton War Memorial

Ernest George Jeffreys enlisted shortly after his eighteenth birthday. He died at only 20 years of age. His three older brothers also served in the AIF, John Jeffreys 14th Battalion being captured in an outpost by the Germans and spent almost 12 months as a prisoner of war, Thomas Jeffreys 58th Battalion and Robert Charles Jeffreys 30th Battalion both returned to Australia during 1919. They were the sons of John and the late Elizabeth Jane Jeffreys of Casterton, Victoria. The mother, Elizabeth, passed away in 1917 when her four sons were on active service in France.
