Henry Alexander Sykes served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 240 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Newspaper reports note that he remained in South Africa after completing his service to take up employment with the Imperial Military Railways.

At a date unknown he returned to Australia to reside in NSW enlisting in WW1 at Sydney. Second service was as a Private (rising to rank of Corporal) S.N. 184 in the 3rd and 55th Infantry Battalions AIF, WW1.
