Died on this date – 8th February … Henry Walter Sharp was born at Thornhill, Dumfries, Scotland around 1880 to parents David & Jessie Margaret Sharp (nee Murdoch).
Henry Sharp came to Australia when he was aged around 19 years old, according to information supplied by Charles David Sharp, brother. He attended Hawkesbury Agricultural College, New South Wales.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 12th September, 1916 as a 31 year old, single, Dairy farmer from Peel Street, West Tamworth, NSW (address as per Embarkation Roll, however Henry Sharp listed his address as East St. Five Dock, Sydney, NSW on the “Application to Enlist in the Australian Imperial Force”)
[Note: The middle name of “Walton” was listed on Embarkation Roll, Attestation Papers & most of the forms in Service Record file, however the Roll of Honour form to be completed by the next-of-kin was pre-typed with the name “Henry Walton Sharp” – “Walton” had been crossed out & written as “Walter”. The Roll of Honour information form was completed by his father – David Sharp]
Private Henry Sharp, Service number 6180, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 25th October, 1916 with the 5th Infantry Brigade, 20th Infantry Battalion, 17th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 28th December, 1916.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
On 29th December, 1916 Private Sharp was marched in from Australia to 5th Training Battalion, Rollestone, Wiltshire, England.
He was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 29th January, 1917 & was reported seriously ill with Bronchitis & Asthma on 5th February, 1917.
Private Henry W. Sharp died on 8th February, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital from Pneumonia* (Hospital Admissions form states cause of death was pneumonia – other forms in Private Sharp’s Service record file state cause of death as Chronic bronchitis & asthma).
Private Henry Walter Sharp was one of six soldiers to die in a period of 24 hours - all related to pneumonia, influenza & bronchitis.

He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
