From Australian Remembrance Army
Australian World War One veteran Edward Morensie (also recorded as Morency) Campbell (462 Sapper 3rd Field Company Engineers / 1793 Private 9th Battalion), is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now marked with a plaque recognising their service for Australia.
We unveiled his plaque in Lutwyche Cemetery on 23 September 2023, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Edward Morensie Campbell was born on 5 December 1875 in Brisbane, Queensland, to John Campbell and Jane Campbell (née McCormish). He married Mary Kate Breddin in 1895, and the couple had six children between 1895 and 1903. His civilian occupation was timber getter.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Brisbane on 11 January 1915, aged 38. On enlistment, he was allotted service number 462 and posted as a sapper to the 3rd Field Company, Australian Engineers. Later in 1915, he was transferred to the infantry, joining the 9th Battalion as a private and issued a new service number, 1743.
During his service, he was repeatedly hospitalised due to illness, including rheumatism and synovitis. He received medical treatment in Malta and England, including admission to the 3rd London General Hospital at Wandsworth. In 1916, he was again hospitalised while serving in the Middle East, including treatment in Egypt and Cairo, with his condition recorded as chronic synovitis, particularly affecting his knee. Edward Campbell was returned to Australia and discharged from the Australian Imperial Force in 1917 as medically unfit for further service.
Following his return to Australia, he is recorded between 1925 and 1939 as living in the Kenmore–Moggill area of Brisbane, where he continued working as a timber getter.
Private Edward Morensie Campbell died on 3 March 1950, aged 74, and was buried in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
