71 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 12th August 1954, Private Charles Arthur Barwick, also known as P.K., 2nd Battalion (Reg No-2924), labourer (Messrs. Kitchen and Sons, Limited) and ironworker (B.H.P. Steelworks), from 82 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales and Clyde Street, Hamilton North, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-43. 133.
Born at Tighes Hill, New South Wales on the 23rd January 1894 to George William, died 29.7.1951, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 87, buried at CATHOLIC 2-39. 149, from 86 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales, and Margaret (Maggie) Pearl Barwick nee Landrigan, died 26.4.1950, Royal Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 88, mother of 7, sleeping at CATHOLIC 2-39. 151, from 86 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales; husband of Kathleen Amelda Barwick nee Hill, married 1920, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 27.7.1967, Wallsend, N.S.W., sleeping at CATHOLIC 2-43. 135, name not inscribed at gravesite, P.K. enlisted on the 19th July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on the 30th September 1915.
Admitted to hospital 24.8.1917 (broken left collar bone, accidental playing football).
Report of a letter sent home to Mrs. Barwick states that P.K. was on furlough in England and had been wounded. Service record gives no indication of being wounded.
Commenced return to Australia 4.12.1918.
P.K. arrived home invalided on the 15th January 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 4th April 1919.
Received all 3 War Medals.
Mr. Barwick’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Tighes Hill-Australian Holy Catholic Guild Roll of Honour and the Mayfield Kitchen & Sons Limited Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at P.K.’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
