Alfred was the youngest of nine children of Charles August Johnson (born 1850 in Kalmar, Sweden) and Mary Auguste Caroline Luder (born 1860 in Germany). Charles was a Mariner when he arrived in Sydney NSW on board the Jason in 1868, and Mary immigrated with her parents, arriving in Moreton Bay in 1865. Charles was a Tailor in Ipswich, QLD when he married Mary in 1878, They raised their family in Ipswich, and following Mary's death in 1906, Charles and his children moved to Brisbane.

Alfred was working as a Station Hand in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. He served as a Private (Service No:5923) with 26th Infantry Battalion and was Discharged in June 1919. Brother Frederick Walter (Service No:1675) and Brothers-in-Law Oscar Jospeh Gridley (Service No:370), John Hinkley (Service No:5108) and Charles Albert Fry (Service No:5336) also served in WWI.

In December 1917 Alfred married Eva May Black (born 1891 in Brisbane, QLD) and they lived in Brisbane where Alfred was a Seaman. Alfred died in 1945 and Eva in 1961
