Biography contributed by John Edwards

Believed to have been born on 29 Nov 1881 in Queensland as Herman Richard NOTHDURFT, the son of August Nothdurft and Marie Wilhelmine (nee Behrens) who lived at "Gowrie Little Plain" (between Toowoomba and Oakey).

He changed his name to John Daniel NEWMAN at some point, and then enlisted under the name Daniel John SMITH, born at Bathurst, NSW in about July 1878.
