Private Alec Howitt (Service No:3340) enlisted in the AIF on 28 July 1915, and was attached to 7th Infantry Battalion on 11 October 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Alexandria on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Private Howitt died in hospital in Heliopolis on 21 November 1915 (Measles and Meningitis). Younger brothers Gordon and Ken served in WWII.

Alec was born in Deniliquin, New South Wales in 1894, eldest of twelve children of Alexander (Alec) Howitt Snr (b1865 in Banffshire, Scotland) and Jessie May Preston (b1876 in Moama, New South Wales). Alec Snr was a Farm Servant in Scotland when he immigrated in 1889 on board the Jumna, and settled in the Deniliquin district. Alec Snr and Jessie married in 1894 in Deniliquin, and lived at Moira Station via Mathoura, where Alec Snr worked as a Boundary Rider. In 1901 Alec Snr took up the  farming property Melrose at Calimo via Deniliquin, where he settled and raised his family and was a Farmer/Grazier.
