46 years ago today, on the 12th February 1978, Private William George England, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-3289), fireman (Newcastle Ferry Company, Limited), from William Street, Stockton, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 78. BAPTIST-D SW. 30.

Born at Bristol, England about March 1899 (immigrated to Australia August 1911, about 12 years of age) to William, died 7.8.1938, West Maitland, N.S.W., age 67, remarried 1926, Waratah, N.S.W. to Annie England nee Crisp, and Elizabeth Rose Emma England nee Daw, died 10.4.1925, West Maitland, N.S.W., age 52; husband of Eva England nee King (married 1925, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 21.8.1977, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 76, sleeping here), William enlisted on the 6th June 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on the 16th July 1917.

Wounded in action - 17.4.1918 (gassed, Villers-Bretonneux).

Granted leave to England from 5.4.1919 to 5.7.1919 (farming).

Commenced return to Australia 22.8.1919.

William arrived home on the 13th October 1919, being discharged on the 12th November 1919.

Mr. England’s name has been inscribed on the Stockton Soldiers' Memorial, Stockton Congregational Church Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
