Son of Archiblad William Tunel Vernede, Munnar, Madura District, South India. Grandfather was a French national.

Brother of Charles William Ewart who was killed in action on 5 August 1916 while serving with the 48th Battalion and is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery, Plot XIII, Row M, Grave 10

Next of kin later change to his wife Mabel Winifred Vernede nee Winfield of Great Clarendon Street, Oxford, England. James and Mabel married on 24 February 1917 in Oxford, England. He was thought to have committed bigamy using the name John Neville Ewart Vernede

Commenced return to Australia on 22 July 1917 aboard HT Nestor disembarking on 13 September 1917
