Robert was the son of Robert Henry and Mary Ann Johnston, of Pericoe, near Bega, New South Wales. A dairy farmer, he was a well-built young man, at 6 feet 2 and half inches and 181 pounds (82 kg) when he enlisted in September 1915.
He joined the 53rd Battalion in France during July 1916 and was severely wounded at Flers on 23 October 1916. He suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and fractures to his lower limbs, and although carried to a dressing station, he died of his wounds shortly after.
His brother, 776 Pte. Harry Johnston had served with the 7th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli and was killed in action with 56th Battalion during July 1918, aged 27.
Both brothers are remembered on the Towamba and Bemboka War Memorials.
