Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Donald Mowat was the son of Donald and Mary Jane Mowat of Rockhampton, Queensland. He was twenty years of age and a carpenter when he enlisted. His younger brother, 5071 Pte. Calder Miller Mowat 49th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Dernancourt, France, on 5 April 1918, aged 21.

Donald joined the 9th Battalion in France during October 1916. He was wounded in action on three separate occasions, being evacuated to England for treatment each time. The first was trench feet in late 1916, then a severe gunshot wound to his left arm in late 1917, and finally another severe gunshot wound to his right arm, resulting in a badly fractured right arm.

He was returned to Australia due to the last wound in November 1918.
