A Digger of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
64 years ago today, on the 7th July 1958, Private Andrew Watt, 3rd Battalion (Reg No-65849), ironworker from Darlinghurst, New South Wales and Newcastle? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. METHODIST 4-25. 44.
Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 14th January 1886 to George Robert and Barbara Watt; husband of Elizabeth Watt nee Haynes (married 1909, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1965, sleeping here), Andrew enlisted May 1918 with the 16th New South Wales Reinforcements at East Sydney, N.S.W.
Admitted ship's hospital 21.10.1918 (influenza).
Andrew returned home February 1920, being discharged on the 1st March 1920.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Did not receive Victory Medal.
I have not located Mr. Watt’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
Many thanks to Shayne Cunningham for the notification.
I located Andrew resting in an unmarked grave, so November 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to Andrew.
Lest We Forget.
