He served with 3rd A.F.A. Brigade~Australian Field Artillery-Service Number 1725.

He was 26 and the son of Samuel and Isabella Jane McLeary of Flinders, Fassiefern Line, Queensland.

Died on this date - 2nd March........Sgt Alexander Allan McLeary was born at Fassiefern, near Ipswich, Queensland in 1892. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 6th September, 1914 as a 22 year old Butcher from Beaudesert, Queensland.

Driver McLeary was posted to 7th Battery Field Artillery on 6th September, 1914. He joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 4th April, 1915 but reverted to the rank of Gunner on 12th August, 1915 while posted at Gallipoli Peninsula as punishment for “Conduct to the prejudice of good order & military discipline.”

Gunner McLeary was posted as a deserter by a Court of Inquiry on 7th September, 1915 at Zateriah, Alexandria. According to details recorded on his Attestation Papers he was granted a free pardon.

Gunner McLeary disembarked from Novian at Alexandria on 22nd December, 1915 from Gallipoli Peninsula. He was AWL from 12 noon on 19th February, 1916 to 8 pm on 22nd February, 1916 & awarded 4 days Field Punishment & forfeited 8 days' pay.

Gunner McLeary arrived in France on 29th March, 1916. He was wounded in action in France on 5th August, 1916 with shrapnel wounds to left leg. He rejoined his Unit on 13th August, 1916.

Gunner McLeary was promoted to Bombardier on 5th October, 1916. He was sent to Hospital with Jaundice on 7th October, 1916 then again on 26th October, 1916. He was transferred to England & admitted to Dunsdale (V.A.D.) Hospital, Westerham, Kent on 3rd November, 1916 & discharged on 5th January, 1917.

Bombardier McLeary was returned to France on 21st March, 1917 & rejoined his Unit on 21st April, 1917. He was promoted to Temporary Corporal on 22nd September, 1917 then promoted to Corporal on 15th November 1917. Corporal McLeary was then promoted to Sergeant on the same day.

Sergeant Alexander Allan McLeary was transferred to R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery) on 26th January, 1918. He was attached for duty with Permanent Cadre of R.B.A.A. at Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England on 29th January, 1918. He was returned to France on 1st July, 1918 & rejoined his Unit on 8th July, 1918.

Sergeant Alexander Allan McLeary was wounded in action (2nd occasion) on 10th September, 1918 in France with shrapnel wounds to head. He was evacuated to England & admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, England on 28th September, 1918 with shrapnel wounds to head - severe. He was reported as dangerously & seriously ill.

Sergeant Alexander Allan McLeary died at 6. 5 pm on 2nd March, 1919 at 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, England from wounds received in action - shrapnel wounds to head. He was buried in St. Mary’s Churchyard, Westerham, Kent, England.
