From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

58 years ago today, on the 30th August 1962, Private Richard Crook, 20th Battalion (Reg No-4560), clipper in the mines, of Teralba Road, Adamstown, New South Wales and 6 Mankilli Street, Blacksmiths, N.S.W., (Google showing no house here), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. CATHOLIC 3-85. 67.

Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 21st May 1896 to Daniel and Elizabeth Crook of Glebe Road, Adamstown, N.S.W. and Charles Street, Abermain, N.S.W. (not married?), Richard enlisted August 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 9.11.1916 (GSW thigh - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article133849657), 20.7.1918 (GSW left arm, shoulder, severe - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article140975174), 31.8.1918 (GSW left arm), Richard was invalided to England 5.9.1918, returning home March 1919, and discharged on the 22nd May 1919.

Mr Crook’s name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial and the Adamstown Methodist Church Honour Roll (photo, 2nd unveil on the 20th June 1917 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article134867979).

Richard had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so November 2015 I placed a cross on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. CATHOLIC 3-85. 67.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for official commemoration at Mr Crook’s gravesite, to restore his honour and dignity for his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country during The Great War.
