Herbert left Australia on board H.T.Transvania on 29 March 1916 to join the British Expeditionary Force in Alexandria, prior to being sent to France with the 10th Battalion. He was hospitalised at Etaples in France with influenza on 4 November. Herbert transferred to the 11th battalion on 12 December 1917. He sustained a severe gunshot wound to the right leg during action on 16 June 1918 and spent much of the year in hospitals at Herne Bay, Weymouth and Sutton Veny in England convalescing. Herbert’s parents were advised of his situation on 6 July. Herbert returned to Australia on the Derbyshire on 7 March 1919 and was discharged on 12 June.
