Biography contributed by Peter Rankin

An epitaph written by his mother reads-

COULD I HIS MOTHER CLASPED HIS HAND,

THE SON I LOVED SO WELL,

OR KISSED HIS BROW WHEN DEATH WAS NEAR,

AND WHISPERED MY SON FAREWELL.
