Biography contributed by Westminster School

John Ross Barber was born on the 29th of July, 1876, in the town of Goolwa, South Australia. Barber was the son of William Barber and Elizabeth nee Hennessy, both whom are of British background. The Methodist family later moved to Waikerie.

Before Barber joined the Australian Military Forces, he worked as a stable man and never married. On the 10th of May, 1916, he enlisted as an A.I.F. (Australian Imperial Force) private aged 39 years and 10 months. His regimental number was 2123A. After enlistment, Barber was appointed to the 2nd Depot Battalion.

On the 12th of August, 1916, Barber embarked aboard the A70 “Ballarat” at Outer Harbour, South Australia. He disembarked the ship on the 30th of September, 1916, in Plymouth, England. Over a month later, he proceeded to Etaples, France where he was marched out to the 48th Battalion A.I.F. and was taken on strength.

On April 11, 1917, Barber was reported to be missing. Later, he was also reported to be wounded. He was finally adjudged to have been killed in action on the 11th of April, 1917, in France. He was 40 years old in age and his army rank before death remained as a private. None of his personal belongings were recovered.
