Joe was the third of eighteen children of John Godfrey Johnson (b1848 in Bolivia, NSW) and Ellen Folwell (b1859 in Stawell, Victoria). John's parents had arrived in 1841 as Assisted Immigrants on board the Brothers and lived in Bolivia NSW before following the goldrushes to Victoria and WA. John (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1875 in Heathcote, Victoria and lived in Victoria and NSW before moving their family to WA in the early 1890s. John worked in Perth WA as a Labourer before becoming a Farmer in Darkan WA.
Joe was a Carter in Midland Junction WA in 1899 when he married Lucy Evaline Bowra (b1881 in Perth WA). Joe had been sentenced to six months hard labour in Fremantle Prison in May 1898 for receiving stolen goods. Joe and Evaline lived in Midland Junction where Joe worked as a Carter before moving to Perth - Joe worked as a Fireman before becoming a Compositor for the Daily News for six years. In 1917 Joe was a Farmer at Tichville Farm, Hines Hill near Northam WA when he enlisted in the AIF. He was a Private (Service No:52073) attached to 2nd Field Ambulance when he was Discharged in September 1919. Joe was one of eight brothers who served in WWI and WWII and two of his sons - George William (Service No:WX21629) and Ralph Joseph (Service No:W13357) served in WWII.
Returning to Hines Hill near Northam, WA Joe was a Farmer in 1924 when he was sentenced by the Supreme Court in Perth to ten years hard labour at Fremantle Prison for Incest (The Blackwood Times; 1924). In 1930 Lucy was granted a Divorce. Joe died in 1934.
