"Death Under Anaesthetic. Ex-Soldier Collapses.
The death of Harry Norris, manufacturer, of Burke-rond, Malvern, who collapsed while undergoing an operation at the Alfred Hospital on 19th inst., was investigated by the City Coroner, Mr. Berriman, yesterday. Dr. J. Brett, who made the post-mortem examination, said that death was due to heart failure. Deceased's heart was affected, but its condition would not be disclosed by an examination made before the operation. Dr. James Buchanan and Dr. H. Coombs, who carried out the operation, said they had been informed that deceased had been gassed at the war. His lungs and heart appeared to be sound, however, but he suddenly collapsed after ether had been administered. A verdict was returned that deceased had died from natural causes while undergoing an operation, which had been carried out with every care." - from the Melbourne Age 27 Sep 1924 (nla.gov.au)
