Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

55 years ago today, on the 12th October 1966, Gunner Arthur Davis Oliver, 9th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-23109), plumber and sheet metal worker from Neil Street, Toowoomba, Queensland and Newcastle? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 80. CONGREGATIONAL-4CSE. 55.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 25th August 1886 to Benjamin Joseph B and Francis Ellen Oliver of Everton Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, Arthur enlisted January 1916 at Toowoomba, Queensland.

Admitted to hospital 11.10.1916 (fractured clavicle), 12.2.1917 (lumbago), 3.4.1917 (abscess right elbow), 18.6.1918 (old fractured shoulder, periostitis of shoulder region).

Reenlisted 15.3.1920, Australian Air Corps (sheet metal worker) at the Central Flying School, Laverton, Western Australia. Discharged (Sergeant) 22.6.1920.

Arthur’s name has not been inscribed on the family headstone, so May 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I would certainly appreciate contact with descendants for more information and photos of this Forgotten WW1 Hero.

Lest We Forget.
