"A SOUTH AUSTRALIAN HERO. CAPTAIN SAWER'S DEATH.
Major Edgar Geoffrey Sawer, M.C., of the 12th Machine Gun Company, who re turned to Melbourne on May 22, died on May 31 at the Caulfield Military Hospital. He had been seriously ill since he landed here, Major Sawer enlisted in South Australia on April 28, 1915, giving his occupation as that of a soldier. He was then 25 years of age. He was attached to the 48th (South Australian) Battalion, and after serving on Gallipoli went, to France, where he was promoted to the rank of captain and subsequently major. He visited Australia on sick leave last year and returned to the front. He was decorated by the King at Buckingham Palace in July, 1917, having won his Military Cross in the previous year. The funeral was with full military honors." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 08 Jun 1918 (nla.gov.au)
