Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Richard Duffin served on Gallipoli from late August until being evacuated sick with dysentery towards the end of the campaign. He was badly wounded in the thigh at Pozieres on the 27 July 1916 and evacuated to England. He didn’t rejoin his unit in France until September 1917, and was killed in action only weeks later, having no known grave.

His younger brother, 856 Pte. George William Duffin, 18th Battalion AIF, a famous Rugby League player, was killed in action at Gallipoli, 22 August 1915, aged 27.

They were both the sons of John and Henrietta Duffin. Their mother had died in 1903, when Richard was about 25 years of age, and their father Jack lived in Manly NSW.
