Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Private James Frederick Rice, one of two brothers who served and suffered during The Great War resting side by side at Sandgate Cemetery.

62 years ago, on the 5th July 1960, Private James Frederick Rice, 1st Battalion (Reg No-3312), labourer from "Beechworth", 13 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. CATHOLIC 2-51. 79.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 30th August 1893 to James William and Elizabeth (Eliza) Rice, James enlisted September 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 7.1.1917 (trench feet), 7.2.1917 (trench feet, old wound), 12.3.1917 (hallux valgus - foot deformity, severe), 8.5.1918 (influenza).
Wounded in action - 18.9.1918 (GSW face, left leg & right knee, severe).

James was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 30th March 1919.
Older brother Joseph (Joser) Patrick (56th Battalion, Reg No-3470, born 1891, died 15.11.1938) resting side by side. CATHOLIC 2-51. 77.

Wounded in action - 24.4.1918 (gassed), 17.8.1918 (GSW chest, left arm, head).

Both brother’s names have been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor (photo).

I located James resting in the unmarked grave next to brother Joser, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so May 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be installed at Jame's gravesite to restore Honour and Dignity to James.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
