Private Thomas Poole (Service No. 3190), an Australian World War One veteran, is among almost 800 previously unmarked WWI veterans’ graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now honoured with a plaque recognising their service for Australia.
On 23 September 2023, his plaque was unveiled in Lutwyche Cemetery, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:
Thomas Poole was born in 1871 at West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, to Josiah Poole and Elizabeth Poole (née Parker). He emigrated to Queensland as a young man and, on 27 November 1901, married Ada Hunt in Brisbane. The couple made their home in Queensland and had six children between 1903 and 1924.
On 13 September 1915, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Brisbane, aged 44, giving his trade as painter and naming his wife Ada as his next of kin. Allocated to the 26th Battalion, he embarked for overseas service from Brisbane on 31 December 1915 aboard HMAT Itonus (A50). The battalion trained in Egypt before deploying to France, where it endured the hardships of trench warfare on the Western Front.
Private Poole completed his service without suffering major illness or injury. He returned to Australia aboard the troopship Trasos Montes and was discharged from the AIF on 19 July 1919.
After the war, Thomas and Ada lived in Brisbane and later at Amiens, Queensland — one of the soldier settlement districts established for returned servicemen. Ada died there on 4 September 1925, and Thomas later returned to live in Brisbane. He didn’t remarry.
Private Thomas Poole died on 23 May 1949, aged 78, and was buried the following day in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity has now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
