Son of William Upton and Mrs Upton of Norwick, Norfolk, England

9 December 1914 - enlisted at Liverpool, NSW, with the 1st Artillery Brigade and with the rank of Driver

16 May 1916 - tranferred to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column

23 November 1916 - promoted to Bombardier

Commenced return to Australia on 4 January 1919 aboard HT Morvada disembarking on 20 Feruary 1919 

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

26 April 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District
