Son of Peter Van Brummelen and Susannah Marie Johanna Van Brummelen nee Licas of Dandenong, Victoria. Brother of Hein de Groot Van Brummelen who returned to Australia on disembarking on 13 Februry 1918 having served with the 3rd Supply Column.

Commenced return to Australia on 21 July 1917 aboard HT Euripides
