Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John Edgar was reported wounded and missing at Pozieres on 18 August 1916. From the Red Cross files, he was seen to be wounded on this date and could not be got back to the Australian lines. Sergeant E. J. Clutterbuck No. 588 7th Battalion stated ‘I knew casualty very well. He was in my platoon. He was killed under my eyes by a bomb, which struck him in the chest on the 18th August, 1916, at Pozieres in the road towards Martinpuich. The body was not buried as there was no time."

Pte. William Thomas Johnston, No. 4215, 7th Battalion has stated that on or about the 18th August, 1916, Pte. J. Edgar was seen in a shell hole near Pozieres very badly wounded on the right side. Informant's comrades went back for a stretcher and on their return were unable to find Pte. Edgar although he had been left lying nearer to our lines than to those of the enemy.

He was confirmed by a Court of Enquiry held during June 1917 to have been killed in action 18 August 1916.

His remains were discovered in July 1920 and buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery.

He is remembered on the Tocumwal War Memorial.
