4 Oct 1917: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, On the morning of the 4th Oct 1917, during the advance on BROODSEINDE RIDGE east. YPRES, Pte. Hayes was one of the gun crew, the Officer and N.C.O. had become casualties, the gun being blown up at the same time. He took charge and reorganised the teams and salvaged another gun. When he reached his objective he got both guns into splendid tactical positions and got communication with his unit headquarters. Although he suffered heavy casualties by his courage, cheerfulness and resource he set a very fine example to his comrades. He remained in sole charge of the two guns for two days.
