Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 5th April 1918, Private William Frank Cush, referred to as Billy, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1097), shiftman (mining), from 128 Elgin Street, West Maitland, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at the 41st Casualty Clearing Station, France, (wounded by enemy artillery shell, the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux), age 30 years 2 months.
Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 13th January 1888 to Thomas Patrick (died 4.10.1906, Hannan Street, West Maitland, N.S.W., age 45, buried at Campbells Hill Cemetery, N.S.W., no memorial inscription and Elizabeth Anne Cush, died 19.1.1952, 92 Mt. Pleasant Street, Maitland, N.S.W., age 86, mother of 6, incorrect information?; husband of Janet Tinsley (Linsley) Cush nee Chulow, married 18.3.1916, West Maitland, N.S.W., from 92 Mt. Pleasant Street, Maitland, N.S.W., died 25.10.1962, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 73, 44 years a widow, sleeping here), Billy enlisted on the 3rd December 1915, age 27 years 10 months, at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.
Admitted to hospital 7.8.1917 (hernia), 13.11.1917 (septic knee), 4.12.1917 (fractured arm).
Granted furlough from 24.8.1917 to 7.9.1917.
Wounded in action - 4.4.1918 (SW abdomen, chin, hand).
Place of Association - West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.
Billy’s name has been inscribed on the Maitland & District Municipal Roll of Honor, West Maitland Citizens' Memorial, West Maitland St Mary's Church of England Roll of Honour, West Maitland Superior Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at the memorialised Cush gravesite in remembrance of Billy’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. SALVATION ARMY-G. 12.
