Bertie enlisted as a Private with the 19th Infantry Battalion on 17.7.1915 and embarked from Australia on 30.9.1915. He served in France and England and returned to Australia on 9.10.1918. Discharged (as medically unfit) on 12.5.1919.

Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
