Arthur George JEFFERY (Service Number 2850) was born on 25th June 1894 in Shaftsbury, England.
He commenced working in the NSW Tramways on 7th January 1915, as a cleaner in Sydney. He did not work there long before he was granted leave to join the AIF on 2nd July 1915.
He was 21 when he enlisted. He embarked from Sydney on 30th September 1915 on HMAT A8 ‘Argyllshire’.
He had not been on duty long before he was admitted to hospital in Abbassia (Egypt) on 31st October 1915 for mumps. However, his hospital stay was short, as he was discharged to duty again on 14th November. He joined his Battalion on 21st January 1916.
He embarked from Alexandria on 19th June 1916 to join the British Expeditionary Forces and disembarked at Marseilles (France) on 29th June.
After roughly five months in the field, he was killed in action in France on 3rd December 1916.
He is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.
Following his death, his mother in England was sent personal items of his, such as a wallet, letters, and photos. She also received the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal on behalf of her son’s service.
