A/Sergeant Sydney James Broughton Le Serv (Service Nos:962/10056) enlisted in the AIF on 23 September 1914 and was a Private attached to 2nd Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Gallipoli on 18 October 1914 on board HMAT Suffolk, WiA (GSW arm) in the Dardanelles on 30 April 1915, Private Le Serv returned to Australia before returning to Egypt in December 1915. From Egypt, Gunner Le Serv embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 19 June 1916 and served on the Western Front with 3rd Field Artillery Brigade. He was an A/Sergeant attached to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 17 January 1920.

Sydney was born in Leichardt, Sydney, NSW in 1884, fourth of five children (and first born in Australia) of Alfred Le Serv (b1847 in Surrey, England) and Eliza Jane Holloway (b1855 in London, England). Alfred (a Coachman) and Eliza married in 1877 in Middlesex, and immigrated with their first three children in March 1884, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Warwick. Alfred and Eliza settled in Leichardt in Sydney, where they raised their family and Alfred worked as a Park Ranger and Saddler.

Sydney worked in Leichardt as a Brass Finisher and Fitter and Turner with Everleigh Workshops, and in 1907 married Josephine Irene O'Farrell (b1886 in Sydney, NSW). Sydney and Josephine settled in Leichardt, where they raised their family - Sydney was Secretary of the Leichardt Swimming Club, served with the Australian Rifles and Garrison Artillery, and working as a Fitter and Turner/Engineer when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Sydney and Josephine lived in Leichardt, where Sydney worked as an Engineer. Sydney died in 1964 and Josephine in 1972.
