“Our Scottish Cousins”
The Ithaca War Memorial Centenary Project has already been very rewarding in breaking open the stories of the people named there and giving them and their families new life. The research has underscored a strong Scots demographic in Brisbane’s inner west in the late 1880’s/early1900’s.
How delighted we were to have Eric Scott of the local 1st Brisbane Boys Brigade include us in an act of commemoration with Tony Byrne and the lads of 25th Stirling (Dunblane) Boys Brigade who took a great interest in Sgt Francis Chalmers (9th Battalion), carpenter of Alice St, Paddington, who had been born in Beith, Ayrshire, in 1894 - a local lad to both communities.
The boys played at Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate on Tuesday 5th July 2022, commemorating their own local men and 12 of ours in a very kind gesture, which also took them out to Tyne Cot to remember Pvt Ernest Woodward (15th Battalion), a confectioner from Windsor Rd, Red Hill.
A big thank you then to Eric, Tony and the 25th Strirling (Dunblane)Boy’s Brigade
