A farmer from Townsville, Qld, prior to enlistment, Thomas Donovan embarked from Australia with the 25th Battalion on 30 December 1915. He later transferred to the 47th Battalion and was killed in action by shellfire at Pozieres, France, on 4 August 1916, aged 24. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France. A younger brother 25434 Gunner Robert Joseph Donovan, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, died of illness in France on 23 October 1918. Another brother, 3304 Pte John Donovan, briefly served overseas with the 25th Battalion before being returned to Australia as he was underage. John Donovan died in Queensland during 1921, at 23 years of age.

They were the sons of John and Annie Donovan of Wynnum, Queensland.
