An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
85 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 30th June 1937, Gunner Charles Henry Way, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-253), railway porter from 39 Lawson Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 3 Baird Street, Hamilton North, N.S.W., father of three (Glady, Leslie, Joyce), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 44. ANGLICAN 2-145. 20.
Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 15th December 1892 to George Henry and Ada Louise Way of 45 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales; husband of Ada Louise Way nee Ives? (married?, died?) of 35 Moonbie Street, Summer Hill, N.S.W., Charles enlisted August 1914 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Wounded in action 9.5.1915 (GSW left back & stomach).
Embarked for England 26.8.1915.
Admitted to hospital 11.9.1915.
Charles returned home April 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 21st May 1918.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, wounding, returning home, etc.
Mr. Way’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, 3rd Australian Garrison Artillery Roll of Honour (unveiled date unknown, 50 names inscribed, 8 Fallen, proudly displayed at Fort Scratchley Military Museum, 3 Nobbys Road, Newcastle East, N.S.W.), Newcastle Protestant Alliance, Friendly Society of Australia, Lodge No-7 Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.
I have placed poppies on Charles’s brown granite Commonwealth War Graves headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge 29.6.1937.
