'LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

Private G.H. Phillips, son of Mr. H. Phillips, Sedborough Street, Rockhampton , and who also landed at Anzac Bay on the 25th. April, returned to Rockhampton by the mail train yesterday afternoon, Private Phillips was among the soldiers in the first boat to leave the destroyers anchored off Anzac. Two of the party were killed within twenty-five yards of the beach, but Private Phillips and the others effected a landing. The following afternoon he was wounded by shrapnel in the legs and was sent to Egypt, but was back in Gallipoli the following Sunday morning. He remained in the trenches until the 23rd of July, when he was invalided to Malta suffering from rheumatic fever. After being an inpatient of St. Andrew's and St. David's Hospital for several weeks, he was ordered back to Australia. The Deputy Mayor, Alderman I. Morrison, heartily welcomed Private Phillips back to Rockhampton and congratulated him and his comrades upon their fine achievements.' from Morning Bulletin 6 Dec 1915 (nla.gov.au)
