Walter Shipway was the son of Edgar and Mary (nee Barratt) Shipway of Keilli.

Walter was born at Keilli on 8 August 1891. A labourer, he was 24 years old when he enlisted in Adelaide on 7 September 1915.

Walter was appointed to 12th Reinforcements 9 Light Horse Regiment and embarked from Outer Harbour aboard HMAT A2 “Geelong” on 18 November 1915. On 19 July 1917 9 Light Horse Regiment was engaged in the Second Battle of Gaza at Atawineh on the Gaza to Beersheba Road. In this action Walter received a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. He was evacuated to 14th Australian General Hospital in Cairo. A month later Walter was taken back on strength of the 9th light Horse. Walter embarked from Egypt aboard HT “Oxfordshire” on 10 June 1919 and disembarked at Outer harbour on 10 August. He was discharged on 3 September 1919.
