Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

82 years ago today, on the 24th December 1939, Private Alfred Charles Curtis Gough, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-54195), seaman and coal trimmer from Robertson Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 28 William Street, Carrington (Tighes Hill), N.S.W., father of one son, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 41. ANGLICAN 2-141. 1.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 14th October 1898 to William Curtis and Mary Ellen Gough nee Ward; husband of Violet Gough nee Cullen (married 1923, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1965, sleeping here), Alfred enlisted April 1918 with the 6th General Service Reinforcements - New South Wales at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 11.12.1918 (otitis media - infection or inflammation of the middle ear).
Alfred returned home June 1919 (reported invalided), being discharged on the 16th June 1919.

Mr. Gough’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 23rd February 1924, 258 names inscribed, 40 Fallen) and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.

Alfred’s headstone plaque gives us no indication of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Did not receive Victory Medal.

Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
