James Ewan Astbury was born in June of 1889, in Dergholm, Victoria. Before the war, he was a labourer in his hometown of Apsley, Victoria. He enlisted in the First World War on the 2nd of March 1916 as a 26-year-old and became a part of the 32nd Battalion. James embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board the HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 11th of April 1916. During the war James was taken to many hospitals due to the continuous sound of firing guns making him go temporarily deaf, he was diagnosed with shellshock on the 13th of October 1916. He returned to action but continued to experience several bouts of shellshock during his service. He returned from the war to Australia on January 8th, 1919.
