Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Percy Wood enlisted at the end of 1915. His parents were Thomas and Emily Wood, of Tue Brook, Liverpool, England. His father filled out his Roll of Honour form in much detail and it seems Percy had only arrived in Australia a year before the war.

He and his brother William Wood both gave their place of association as Arncliffe, Sydney, New South Wales. Percy was one of five brothers, four of whom served in WW1. His younger brother, 1672 Private William Howard Wood 5th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Pozieres on 18 August 1916, aged 23. William was in fact killed about a month before Percy arrived on the Western Front.

Another brother, who served with the British forces, 7695 Pte. Harold Wood 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, died of wounds in France only nine days before the Armistice, on 2 November 1918.

A fourth brother, George Henry Wood, joined the RAF in 1918 but the war ended before he did much service.

Percy joined the 1st Pioneer Battalion in France during September 1916. He was sent to hospital with leg ulcers a few months later. It was July 1917, before he returned to the 1st Pioneer Battalion. Percy Wood was mortally wounded in the back by a piece of shrapnel on 4 October 1917. He was working on making a track at the time, and, carried out by his mates, he died of his wounds the next day in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station.

He left a will in favour of his mum in England.
