Alfred Gordon Hibble was born in Sydney, NSW, Australia, on an unknown exact date (1), but sometime between 1895 and 1896 (2).During his childhood, he lived on Charlotte Street in the Inner-West suburb of Ashfield, NSW (3), and his father was Alfred Edward Hibble, who passed away in 1932. (4)

He attended Sydney Technical High School in 1911, although in is not known what school year he was in during 1911, nor could his graduating year be found. After school he worked as a Chemist (6). On the 6th August, 1915, Hibble decided to enlist himself into the AIF(Australian Imperial Force), in Holsworthy, a suburb in south-western Sydney, he was ranked Corporal, and his service number was 1662. (7).

Not long after, on the 14th of April, Hibble, embarked across the globe, from Australia to Egypt, aboard the HMAT A40 Ceramic, as a part of the 54th Infantry Battalion (8). Once he and his Battalion had arrived, they soon traveled to Tel-el-Kabir, about 110 Km north-north-east of Cairo, before beginning intensive training (9).

In July 1916 Hibble moved from Alexandria to England to the 14th Training Battalion Camp. In March 1917 he was admitted to hospital withg mumps and retrned to the training depot at Tidworth. In early 1918 he was sent to trance and was soon after gassed in March and sent to hospital to recover, returning to his unit in May. He was once again hospitalised in August 1918 and sent to base depot at Havre thereafter. Again he was sent back to his unit to be wounded again 1st Octobver 1918 with gun shot wounds to left ankle and foot. He was sent to the 1st Australian Auxillary Hospital at Harefield to convalesce.
