John A. Cameron, son of Mr. Donald F. Cameron, of "Lochiel," Mansfield, was born at Mansfield on the 10th of October, 1891. He attended the Mansfield Elementary School and, later, the Mansfield High School. After a short course of training at the Teachers' College, Melbourne, in 1914, he was appointed temporary head teacher of School No. 2445, Goomalibee, and afterwards had charge of Schools No. 3450, Grassy Spur; 3525, Womerah; 891, Dixie; and 2786, Barramunga. His record is that of an earnest young man with good teaching instinct.

He enlisted on the 19th of July, 1915, and embarked with the 7th Reinforcements to the 21st Battalion on the transport Wiltshire on the 15th of October, disembarking at Egypt. On the 26th of February, 1916, he was transferred to the 60th Battalion, and with this unit he went to France. On the 19th of July, he was wounded, and was transferred to hospital in England. On the 2nd of January, 1917, he rejoined his Battalion in France, and on the 10th was promoted Sergeant and transferred to the A.A. Pay Corps attached to the 60th Battalion, and on the 13th of June, 1918, was attached to the 54th Battalion.

He returned to Australia on the Borda, arriving in June, 1919. Resuming teaching duty, he took charge of School No. 1488, Tallarook. On the 7th February, 1920, he died after a brief illness.
