James Patrick McInerney was the son of Patrick and Mary McInerney, his father was deceased and his mother Mary had remarried a Mr. Burns and was living in Bullfinch, Western Australia.

James’s younger brother, 371 Sgt. John Francis Leo McInerney 12th Machine Gun Company had been killed in action at Pozieres during 1916, aged 28.

James was working in the Kalgoorlie Post Office when he enlisted, married to Jane Charlotte. He was a late enlistment, joining his Battalion in France during June 1917. He was severely wounded in the head during September 1917 and evacuated to England. He was returned to Australia for discharge during February 1918. He had suffered a bullet wound just above his right eye which fractured his forehead and had problems with sepsis during the healing.

His death in Kalgoorlie in November 1918 was reported as sudden and a great shock to all his friends and family.
