Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

'On 2 April 1917, in the attack on Noreuil, Pte McCubbing a Btn stretcher bearer showed great courage and endurance in tending and in carrying in wounded throughout the day under machine gun and shell fire' (Australian War Memorial - Recomendation for MM).

Private McCubbing - Bob, born in Uddingston, Scotland in 1884 - was the eldest of eight children of Robert Swan McCubbing Snr (b1852 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland) and Charlotte (Lottie) Annie Elfrida Gover (b1864 in Madras, India). Richard (a Procurator) and Lottie married in 1883 in Yorkshire, England - Lottie's mother was Matron at the Blind School at Eccleshall Bierlow in Yorkshire. The couple settled in Glasgow, Scotland where Robert Snr was a Solicitor, Bank Agent and Writer. Following his death in 1911, Lottie and three daughters (Freda, Mary and Jean) emigrated to Australia - escorted by son John - and arrived in Albany WA in 1912 on board the Persic. Sons Bob and Charles were already living in Canada. Lottie and her children settled in Claremont, Fremantle WA. Bob, who had been a Shipping Clerk, joined them - arriving in Fremantle WA in March 1912 on board the Kyarra.

Bob was working as a Carting Contractor in Fremantle WA in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:3596) and served with 28th and 51st Infantry Battalions in France. He was hospitalised on several occasions (Influenza, Dermatitis, Ringworm) and in 1917 was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the Field in France. Bob was Discharged in August 1919.

Returning to Fremantle WA, Bob worked as an Orchardist and then a Farm Hand in Beverley WA. In 1930 in Fremantle WA he married Maude Anne Susham (b1899 in Cuballin, WA). The couple settled at Salmon Gums nr Esperance WA where Bob was a Farmer untl his death in 1949. Maud moved to Kondinin WA in the mid 1970s where she died in 1981.
