WW1

The details provided are taken from the book "Just Soldiers" written by WO1 Darryl Kelly, published in 2004, refer to chapter 34 pages 223 - 226. Vernnon was born 11th Dec 1890. He enlisted at the outbreak of war, and allocated to the 4th Infantry Battalion. During the training period in Egypt he was promoted to Lance Corporal. When the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli he was hospitalised in Egypt, and he did not arrive at Gallipoli until 5th May. He served until 6th Aug when he was wounded in the left arm by a bullet. He was evacuated to the hospital ship for treatment, and then back to Egypt. While in hospital the nursing sister had to inform him that his arm had been amputated, also that he was very lucky to have survived that day. Another bullet had hit him in the chest, but it penetrated his chest pocket, passing through his diary and his pay book, but had stopped when it nearly got through his bible. He was repatriated to home, and discharged soon after.
