From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 18130 & V281486 Corporal Geoffrey Reginald Wallace Tutton of St. Kilda & Malvern, Victoria who prior to his enlistment at the age of 18 for War Service on the 7th of November 1916 had been employed as an engraver.  (note EE: if Cpl Tutton's DoB on his WWII attestation is correct, (Date of birth - 06 Aug 1899) he was over 17 and 2 months when he enlisted).

Geoffrey was allocated to reinforcements for the 2nd Signal Squadron 1st AIF, and was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 9th of May 1917.

Following his arrival in June, Geoffrey was allocated to the Signal Cable Section of the Desert Mounted Corps on the 3rd of August, and would see continuous service during the desert campaigning against the Turkish forces.

Aside slight bouts of sickness, Geoffrey’s service in the field would be uninterrupted until he was evacuated to hospital suffering from appendicitis on the 21st of March 1918. By May, Geoffrey was recovering in a rest camp at Port Said, before again needing to be hospitalized on the 28th of August, after having contracted influenza.

Following Geoffrey’s recovery, he was returned to his Unit for full-time service, and on the 30th of October, he was taken on strength with the 2nd Signal Squadron. With the War against the Turkish forces at its end, Geoffrey remained on duty until he was made ready for his return to Australia, and began his repatriation back home, embarking from Moascar for Port Said on the 13th of March 1919.

From Port Said, Geoffrey was embarked for Australia on the 29th of April, and following his safe return, he was granted his official discharge from the 1st AIF on the 11th of July 1919.

With the outbreak of a Second World War, Geoffrey again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces, when he re-enlisted for War Service on the 27th of April 1942 and was accepted for full-time duty.

Allocated to the Australian Army Pay Corps, Geoffrey was serving as a Corporal with the Australian Army Pay Corps District Accounts Office Victoria Lines of Communication when his premature death occurred due to illness, whilst he was on full-time duty on the 25th of October 1942.

Following his untimely death at the premature age of 43, Corporal Geoffrey Tutton, a veteran of the ‘Great War’, and who had chosen to serve Australia during a second world conflict, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
