Walter Wilkie was 45 years old at the time of enlistment, meaning he was born in 1870. Walter was married to Edith Alice Wilkie, and they had no children together. Walter’s job before enlistment was a skilled labourer. Walter’s religion was the Church of England. Walter was tall at 6 feet 1 inch, weighing at 82kgs and had a 40 inch chest.
Walter enlisted on the 6th of September, 1915 in Adelaide. The ship that Walter embarked on was HMAT Afric A19. Walter’s role in war was a pioneer, who assists other arms in tasks such as the construction of field fortifications, military camps, bridges and roads. After training in England, Walter was moved to France on November 25 1916. Walter was in hospital, due to being wounded in action a number of times but he never stayed very long. Walter was one of the fortunate ones as he was able to return home from service, but unfortunately he had been notified years earlier that his wife had passed away.
Once Walter had returned home from war he went back home to Adelaide and continued his job as a skilled labourer.
