George Edward Cyril Emery (1892-1977) was born on the 17 of April 1892 in Queenstown, South Australia to Mary Ann (Miller)Emery and Thomas Owen Emery. Before the war, he lived in Semaphore, South Australia and worked as a Railway Porter. At the age of 23 years and 11 months, George enlisted in the A.I.F (Australian Imperial Force) on the 17 of April 1916. He embarked on the 27 of June 1916 from Melbourne aboard the HMAT Barambah A37.
George initially served with the 10th Infantry Battalion but transferred to the 48th Infantry Battalion 31st October 1916. Soon after his arrival on the Western Front in France he was hospitalised due to illness. He returned to England for further treatment and rest. He remained serving at various depots in England until November 1917 when he proceeded back to France. He was promoted to Temporary Corporal in April 1918 and the following month was wounded in action and his rank reverted to Private. After treatment in hospital in France and further rest and training at depots he rejoined the 48th Battalion 1st August 1918. He was wounded again with sharpnel wound to his knee and was admitted to hospital in France. After he recovered he was granted leave and went to England. He remained in the UK until his return to Australia.
During his remaining time in England, he married Amy Sarah Brodby 26 December 1918 at a Parish church in Balcombe, England. They were married by Douglas R. Secreton. Rector. The couple returned to South Australia on the 6 of September 1919.
His family's service continued; their son, Sergeant George Owen Emery, served in the Royal Australian Air Force in WWII. His life was taken tragically taken on the 23 of January 1942 at 21. He was buried in the Nakuru North Cemetery in Kenya.
George passed on the 12th of March 1977 at 84. He was buried at the Cheltenham Cemetery, SA, Section I, Drive C, Path 1 where his service is recognised and remembered. His name is also honoured on multiple memorials including the Adelaide South Australia Railways WWI/II honour boards, Peterhead Glanville School Roll of Honour and the Smithfield Honour Roll WWI.
