His story of war was he enlisted as a 19 year old on the 20th October 1914 and joined the 9th Lighthorse Regiment. His vocation was noted as a sailor having sailed on The Exmouth for 19 months. His rank was private and he arrived at Gallipoli were he served for only seven days in the trenches when he was sent to Egypt. Attacked at The Dardanelles he was admitted to hospital in Cairo with severe rhuematism. He spent weeks in hopital and was told to return home after a court of enquiry at Alexandria found he was no longer fit to serve. He left Suez aboard The Themistocles on 15th August 1915 and arrived home in Adelaide on 10th November 1915. On return he was gifted a pension of 52 pounds per annum.
He worked as a stockman and drover both in South Australia and New South Wales. He married his wife Lily in 1916 and had two children, Audrey(1917) and Leonard jnr (1919)
